Dining news: Laura’s Bayview closes, Toscanos starts brunch, sushi burritos in Tacoma

June 15, 2016 03:18 PM

Laura Carlson is officially retired from the restaurant biz. The owner of Laura’s Bayview closed her St. Helens neighborhood restaurant Friday. Carlson said after 35 years in restaurants, it was time to spend some time doing something less taxing. “I’m going to enjoy time with my better half, Ed,” she said. First on the list: some traveling.

Carlson was born and raised in Tacoma, left to work in California and Hawaii, then returned and went to work for Harbor Lights and Anthony’s restaurants. She opened Laura’s Bayview in 2010. Her fish and chips will be missed by my readers, who nominated her restaurant as the best place for that dish in Tacoma back in 2013. A new restaurant will open in the location and I should have details soon.

Chef Tom Pantley shared some outstanding breakfast news for the Puyallup area: He has started Sunday brunch service at his Puyallup restaurant, Toscanos Italian Grill. The first brunch was Sunday and will continue every Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

MORE SUSHI BURRITOS

I wrote earlier this week about the debut of sushi burritos at Happy Teriyaki #4 in downtown Tacoma. And now I found another sushi burrito in Tacoma, although it’s not on the restaurant’s menu.

Gari of Sushi chef Kazuya “Kazu” Kamada is known for his inventive experiments and a sushi burrito (or sushirito) is his latest. He said he toyed with a nori-wrapped version a few years ago, but it never found a home on Gari’s menu.

His current version is wrapped in soy paper and filled with a mix of raw and cooked ingredients, including tuna, salmon, tempura shrimp, crab salad, cucumber, avocadoes, smelt roe, tomato, cream cheese, wasabi, mayonnaise and spicy sauce. “If you want it spicy, add jalapeno,” said Kamada. It’s priced $14.95, but it’s an off-menu order at the Lincoln neighborhood sushi restaurant.

PARLIAMENT LEAVING FOR OREGON

Parliament Distillery in Sumner is moving out of state. The distillery known for its apple pie moonshine plans to open a distillery in Oregon. The Sumner facility will close around mid-July.
