When police got the call about an active shooter at a Puyallup mental health facility, law enforcement from several agencies responded within minutes.

The call was simple: a woman with a gun at Good Samaritan Behavioral Health, 325 E. Pioneer Ave.

Officers swarmed the area, searching the building, parked cars and the surrounding neighborhood.

Four schools – Spinning and Stewart elementary schools, Kalles Junior High and Walker High School – were placed on lockdown.

After an hour or so, police determined there hadn’t been an active shooter.

“There’s no sign of any shooting or injuries inside,” Puyallup police Capt. Dan Pashon said.

Police gave this account:

An “active shooter alert” was inadvertently activated in the building. The alarm caused people to shelter in place as well as exit the building into the parking lot.

Somebody exiting the building saw a woman, possibly holding a gun, in the parking lot.

Officers eventually located the woman at the Puyallup Library and determined that she had been calling 911 on her cell phone, reporting what she believed to be was an active shooter in the building.

Officers from Sumner, Milton, Edgewood, Bonney Lake and Fife, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, responded.

“It being 9/11 was another concern for us,” Pashon said.
