Shot fired in University of Puget Sound attempted robbery

One of three would-be armed robbers fired a gun in the air while trying to hold up a University of Puget Sound student and a friend on campus early Sunday, according to Tacoma police.

The men, who had bandanas covering their faces, pulled out guns and demanded money from the pair at about 3 a.m. Sunday, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said. The pair did not believe the shotgun and handgun were real, so a suspect fired the shotgun into the air, according to an alert sent to UPS students and staff. The robbery attempt was near the Kilworth Memorial Chapel.

The students, who were uninjured, fled into their dormitory and called police.

The suspects — described as three 5-foot-7 white males in their early 20s wearing dark clothes with blue bandanas over their faces — were not found, Cool said.

“This is a very disturbing incident; first, we are grateful that no one was injured, and for the quick response of our Security Services staff and Tacoma police,” UPS spokeswoman Shirley Skeel said. “Support is being provided to students as needed, including a meeting that took place earlier today with students who live near the area where the incident occurred.”
